What role does insulation play in fire safety? In this video, master builder, Matt Risinger, does a demonstration on fire safety. Starting with smoke detectors, which are the most important thing to keep your family safe, it's important to change the batteries once per year and they have a limited lifespan of approximately 10 years before you need to replace them. New ones are a combo of smoke and CO levels. Insulation by Rockwool is mostly recycled compounds from the steel industry. Its use gives your family time to get out of the house if there is a fire. It also has water resistance as well, with water running right off of the insulation. Several things combined give a family enough time to get out of the house safely and the insulation will be a big part of that fire strategy. In this demonstration, a cage full of materials has been burning and is put out by firefighters. A box of chocolates has been sitting on the top of the cage, surrounded by Rockwool insulation. Amazingly, none of the chocolates are melted.
